The Brief
A farm in Cheshire uses around 100,000 kWh of electricity a year and wanted to get its energy bills under control. Farms use power for lights, machinery, pumps, fridges and buildings. Much of that is used in daylight, which makes solar a good fit.
The Challenge
- Sizing the system to match a farm that uses a lot of power, at different times.
- Working safely around animals, machinery and the daily running of the farm.
- Making sure the system and its wiring suit a rural electricity supply.
- Getting G99 approval (permission to connect) from SP Energy Networks for an 80 kWp system.
Our Solution
Our team surveyed the farm, looked at how it uses electricity and designed an 80 kWp solar system (kWp is the system’s peak output) to cover a large part of its 100,000 kWh yearly use. We planned the work around the farm so it could keep running as normal.
We dealt with SP Energy Networks, the local electricity network, and handled the G99 application so the system could be switched on.
The Result
The farm now makes a large part of its own electricity. It buys less power from the grid and is better protected if prices go up. It shows how well solar can work for farms and rural businesses.
